Have you ever been driving in your car and heard a noise that made you go, “Well that’s not good.” The sounds we hear tell us a lot about our world, such as warning us when there is trouble. Similar to concerning noises from your car, there may be noises that you hear from your AC that give you pause.
Didn’t know that your air conditioner could make odd noises? You wouldn’t be the first to be surprised by this. We’ve listed some of the most common sounds you might hear from a faulty system that indicate that you need AC repair in Orange, VA.
7 Sounds That Indicate AC Trouble
There are plenty of noises you don’t want to hear from an air conditioner. These are the most common ones you may encounter.
- Rattling: Hearing the sound of something in your AC shaking around? Rattling noises usually indicate a loose part in the system, such as a bolt, screw, or even a fan blade. The sooner a technician can get into your system to find and address the source of the noise, the better.
- Buzzing: Maybe your AC sounds like it has a beehive inside of it. While hives or swarms do sometimes try to colonize outdoor units, this usually isn’t the cause of a buzzing sound. Buzzing is almost always an indicator of an electrical issue in the system.
- Clanging: If you noticed a rattling noise in your system and brushed it off, you might be hearing a clanging noise now. This is a sign that whatever loose part was rattling around in the system has not broken free and is bouncing around in the system, creating a higher risk for even more damage.
- Screeching: A screeching noise is usually created by metal scraping against metal. When you hear screeching coming from your air conditioner, it may mean that you have a blower motor belt in need of lubrication or a loose fan blade that is scraping around its housing. In either case, you’ll need repairs sooner than later.
- Bubbling: When you hear bubbling inside of your air conditioner, it is the sound of air getting into the refrigerant line. This is a sign you have a leak in your refrigerant line from which refrigerant is escaping. This is a big issue. Don’t ignore bubbling, call a professional if you heard the sound
- Hissing: Similar to bubbling, hissing is another sign you have a leak in your refrigerant line. The difference here is that you are hearing a hissing noise because the leak is in a spot where the refrigerant is in a gaseous state when it is escaping.
- Silence: Don’t hear anything coming from your AC unit? This isn’t good either. Air conditioners run quietly, not silently. Silence means that your system isn’t running at all. This could be due to a thermostat issue, or it could mean you have a serious problem with your AC.
